At Modern Dental, we believe dentistry should fit into your life, not the other way around. If you’ve ever needed dental work and felt overwhelmed by multiple appointments, temporary restorations, time off work, or repeated numbing, you’re not alone. That’s exactly why single-visit dentistry has become one of the most important investments we’ve made for our patients here in Richardson, TX.

From our perspective as a dental practice, same-day dentistry isn’t just about speed, but rather comfort and quality. Using advanced CEREC technology, we’re able to design and place beautiful, durable porcelain inlays and onlays in just one visit. And for many of our patients, that has been a game-changer.

Let’s walk you through what single-visit dentistry really means, how CEREC works, and why porcelain inlays and onlays are such a powerful option for restoring your smile.

What Is Single-Visit Dentistry?

Single-visit dentistry, also known as same-day dentistry, allows us to complete certain restorative procedures from start to finish in one appointment. Instead of taking impressions, sending them to a lab, placing a temporary, and bringing you back weeks later, we’re able to do everything right here in our office.

This approach eliminates unnecessary steps, reduces extra visits, and creates a smoother experience for you and for us. When treatment is more efficient, it tends to be more comfortable and the overall quality of care improves as a result.

In many cases, treatments that used to require two or three appointments can now be completed in about 45 minutes to an hour.

Why We Believe Single-Visit Dentistry Improves the Patient Experience

We understand that the dental office probably isn’t where you want to spend your free time. Our goal is to help you get the care you need while minimizing disruption to your life.

Single-visit dentistry helps us do exactly that by:

  • Reducing the number of appointments
  • Eliminating temporary restorations
  • Minimizing numbing injections
  • Decreasing overall time in the dental chair
  • Reducing anxiety associated with repeat visits

When both you and our team can work more efficiently, it leads to a better experience on all sides. Fewer visits mean fewer scheduling challenges, fewer injections, and fewer opportunities for things like temporary crowns breaking or coming loose.

Most importantly, you leave knowing that your treatment is complete.

Better Efficiency, Better Dentistry

Efficiency doesn’t mean a rush job. When we’re able to complete a restoration in one visit, we maintain full control over the entire process. That allows us to fine-tune details, make adjustments on the spot, and ensure the final result fits comfortably and looks natural.

From our standpoint, the quality of care we’re able to provide with single-visit dentistry is immensely better. We’re not relying on outside labs or waiting weeks to finalize your restoration. Everything is designed, milled, and placed with precision during your appointment.

Fillings vs. Porcelain Inlays and Onlays: What’s the Difference?

One of the most common questions we hear is how porcelain inlays and onlays compare to traditional fillings.

Composite fillings are resin-based materials that we place and shape by hand before curing them with a special light. They’re a great option for small areas of decay or damage. However, as fillings get larger, their durability becomes more of a concern.

That’s where porcelain inlays and onlays come in.

  • Inlays restore the chewing surface of a tooth within the cusps
  • Onlays extend over one or more cusps for added strength

These restorations are made from high-quality porcelain or ceramic that’s infused throughout the material. Instead of being shaped by hand, they’re digitally designed and milled from a solid block of porcelain.

The result?

  • Greater strength
  • Improved durability
  • Better resistance to wear
  • A more natural, aesthetic appearance

For larger restorations, porcelain often gives us more confidence in the long-term strength of the tooth.

Giving You Options and Control

At Modern Dental, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. If a traditional filling is still the right option for you, we’re always happy to discuss that.

Our role is to give you choices and explain the benefits of each option clearly. Some patients prefer a resin filling. Others want the added durability and longevity of porcelain.

When patients feel informed and empowered to choose, they tend to feel more confident and satisfied with their care. We want you to feel like you’re in the driver’s seat of your own dental health.

The Technology Behind CEREC Single-Visit Dentistry

CEREC technology is what makes single-visit dentistry possible. The system works through two main components:

  • CAD (Computer-Aided Design)
  • CAM (Computer-Assisted Manufacturing)

After preparing the tooth, we use a digital scanner to capture a precise 3D image. This completely replaces traditional putty impressions—no messy trays, no gag reflex, and no waiting.

The scan takes about 15–30 seconds.

From there, we design your restoration chairside using advanced CAD software. You can even see the design process if you’re interested. Once the design is finalized, it’s sent to our in-office milling machine, which fabricates your porcelain inlay or onlay from a solid block of ceramic.

Depending on the size of the restoration, milling typically takes 5–10 minutes.

What to Expect During a Same-Day CEREC Appointment

Knowing what to expect can make any dental visit more comfortable. Here’s what a typical same-day restoration looks like at our Richardson office:

  1. Initial digital scan of the tooth
  2. Numbing and preparation of the affected area
  3. Final scan of the prepared tooth
  4. Digital design of your restoration
  5. In-office milling of the porcelain inlay or onlay
  6. Final placement and adjustments

From start to finish, most appointments take about 45 minutes to an hour.

There are no temporaries, no second visits, and no waiting weeks for a lab-made restoration.

Same-Day vs. Lab-Made Restorations: Is There a Difference?

A common concern we hear is whether same-day restorations are as good as lab-made ones.

The short answer: yes.

We use the same types of CAD software, similar milling technology, and many of the same high-quality porcelain materials that dental labs use. In fact, there’s often little to no difference in the final restoration, except for the convenience.

Because everything is done in-office, we’re able to maintain precision and consistency throughout the process. And if adjustments are needed, they’re handled immediately.

Who Benefits Most from Single-Visit Dentistry?

While almost everyone can appreciate fewer appointments, single-visit dentistry is especially beneficial for:

  • Busy professionals with limited PTO
  • Parents juggling work, school, and childcare
  • Patients with dental anxiety
  • Anyone who prefers efficiency and convenience
  • Patients already in the office for a cleaning who need additional treatment

If you’re already here for your routine visit and have the time to extend your appointment by an hour, we can often complete your treatment that same day—saving you from rearranging your schedule later.

The Real-Life Impact on Our Patients

We’ve seen firsthand how single-visit dentistry positively impacts our patients. Fewer visits mean fewer injections, less stress, and less time spent in the dental chair.

We understand that the dental office isn’t most people’s favorite place to be. If we can help you come in less often and still receive high-quality care, that’s a win.

Patients consistently tell us how much they appreciate being able to “get it done” in one visit—and we haven’t heard many complaints about seeing us less.
