There is a specific kind of panic that sets in when you feel a sharp “crunch” during dinner or wake up at 2:00 AM with a tooth that won’t stop throbbing. In those moments, the world feels very small, and your only goal is relief. You don’t want to wait two weeks for an opening; you don’t even want to wait two days.

At Modern Dental in Richardson, TX, we understand that feeling. In fact, Dr. Mitchell Kim founded this practice with that exact scenario in mind. “I was motivated to design our practice to accommodate urgent or emergency visits because that’s what I would want to find if I was in their position,” Dr. Kim says.

When you are in pain, you deserve a dental home that can see you quickly, tell you exactly what is happening, and, ideally, fix the problem before you leave the office. That is the “Modern” approach to urgent care.

When is it a “True” Dental Emergency?

One of the most frequent questions we receive over the phone is: “Is this an emergency, or can it wait until Monday?”

While every patient’s comfort level is different, there are several “red flag” symptoms that Dr. Kim advises you never to ignore. If you are experiencing any of the following, please call us at (972) 578-6633 immediately:

1. Visible Swelling

If you notice swelling in your gums that looks like a small pimple (an abscess) or if your face and jaw are beginning to swell, this is a sign of infection. Infections in the mouth do not clear up on their own and can eventually spread to other parts of the body if left untreated.

2. Pain Accompanied by Fever

If your toothache is paired with a fever, your body is fighting a significant infection. This moves the situation from a “dental issue” to a “health crisis.”

3. Severe, Increasing Pain

Pain that keeps you from sleeping, eating, or concentrating on your work is your body’s loudest alarm bell. If the pain is increasing in duration or severity, the underlying cause is likely progressing as well.

4. Trauma or a Broken Front Tooth

A broken tooth isn’t just a health issue; it can be an emotional one, especially if it’s in the “smile zone.” We treat dental trauma with the urgency it deserves to save the tooth and restore your confidence.

A Note on the ER: If you are experiencing swelling so severe that it is affecting your ability to breathe or swallow, you should head to the nearest Richardson emergency room. For almost everything else, a specialized dental office is the best place for treatment.

The Private Practice Advantage in Richardson

In an era of large corporate dental chains, Modern Dental remains a small, private practice. We believe this is a massive advantage for our patients, especially during an emergency.

In a corporate structure, doctors often have to follow rigid scheduling protocols that leave very little room for walk-ins or same-day add-ons. At Modern Dental, we prioritize the person, not the protocol. Because we are a private office, we have the flexibility to adjust our day to help someone in need.

We Know You

We strive to get to know our patients, their professions, their families, and their schedules. This familiarity allows us to provide better care. For example, if a patient who speaks for a living walks in with a broken front tooth, we understand that this isn’t just a clinical problem; it’s a professional emergency. We understand the urgency of getting them functional again so they can get back to their job.

What to Expect During an Emergency Visit

When you call us with an emergency, our first goal is to get you seated as soon as possible. Once you are in the chair, we follow a streamlined process to move you from pain to a solution:

  1. Visual and Physical Assessment: Dr. Kim will perform a targeted exam to see what brought you in. Is there a visible fracture? Signs of swelling?
  2. Digital Diagnostics: We utilize high-speed digital X-rays to see what is happening beneath the gum line.
  3. 3D CBCT Imaging: If the source of the pain is hidden, we use our CBCT 3D X-ray. This allows us to see the tooth and surrounding bone from every angle, ensuring we don’t miss a tiny fracture or a deep-seated infection that traditional X-rays might overlook.
  4. Information and Education: We believe that information is the best cure for anxiety. Dr. Kim will walk you through the diagnosis, show you the images, and explain your options. Understanding why you are in pain is the first step toward feeling calm.
  5. Same-Day Treatment: Whenever possible, we aim to treat the issue during the same visit. Whether it’s a filling, an extraction, or restorative work using our CEREC CAD/CAM system (which allows us to create crowns in-office), we want to provide definitive care immediately.

The “Hidden” Emergencies: Don’t Wait for the Crisis

Not every emergency starts with a bang. Many of the most difficult cases we see are “prolonged” issues—minor pains that the patient tolerated for too long.

Sporadic Jaw Pain

Do you have pain in your jaw that comes and goes? Maybe it’s a dull ache in the morning or a clicking sound when you eat. This is often related to clenching or grinding (bruxism). Because it isn’t “constant,” many patients ignore it. However, this chronic stress can lead to cracked teeth or TMJ issues. We want to treat these proactively before a tooth actually breaks.

Hot and Cold Sensitivity

If a zing of cold water makes you wince, or if hot coffee causes a lingering ache, your tooth is telling you that its protective layers are compromised. This could be a cavity or a structural crack. Treating these “minor” sensitivities now prevents them from turning into “major” root canals or extractions later.

Calming the Storm Through Information

Dental emergencies are inherently stressful because of the uncertainty. Why does it hurt? Is it going to be expensive? Am I going to lose the tooth?

At Modern Dental, we reduce that anxiety by being an open book. We provide the information you need to make the best decision for your health. When you understand the source of the problem and the clear path to a solution, the fear disappears.
